Mechanically-exfoliated stacks of thin films of Bi2Te3 topological insulators with enhanced thermoelectric performance

The 'graphene-like' mechanical exfoliation of Bi2Te3 films is shown to have a significant effect on the thermoelectric properties of these films. The modification of thermal conductivity due to exfoliation leads to enhanced thermoelectric properties, known as figures of merit (ZT).Two different experimental techniques were used in order to determine the thermal conductivity of the exfoliated films: transient plane source (TPS) and laser flash technique (LFT). Annealing was performed ...

Effects of pH on heat transfer nanofluids containing ZrO2 and TiO2 nanoparticles

This study looks at the effects of pH on heat transfer, among other things, of nanofluids. Over 20% enhancement of thermal conductivity was noted with nanofluids containing 3wt% zirconium dioxide and titanium dioxide. Also noted, was the influence of pH on the stability of the nanofluids. The Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory states that nanoparticles become unstable, form clusters and precipitate, when their pH is near the isoelectric point. This leads to large clusters ...

Parameter Optimization for Measuring Thermal Properties of Electronic Materials using the Transient Plane Source Technique

In the electronic industry, manufacturers depend on accurate thermal conductivity testing methods to characterize their new products, and perform quality control maintenance on continuing materials. This paper assesses the ability of the Transient Plane Source (TPS) technique to accurately characterize newly developed materials, for their use in novel electronic applications. Using the TPS technique, various silicone based electronic materials, of differing filler contents, were thermally characterized and examined for their ...

Optimization of Instrument Cooling Time for Measuring Thermal Properties with the Thermal Constants Analyzer

This study aimed to determine the effect of instrument temperature cooling time on the accuracy of thermal conductivity measurements. Multiple samples, with varying thermal conductivities, were measured using the Thermal Constants Analyzer, and with five different cooling times. Cooling times, and their effect on the thermal conductivity results were analyzed, and appropriate cooling times were suggested, based on the findings....

Transient Thermal Conductivity Measurements -Comparison of Destructive and Non-destructive Techniques

This paper discusses thermal conductivity measurements on homogenous and non-homogenous materials, using three transient methods: Laser Flash Method (LFM), Modified Hot Wire (MHW), and the Transient Plane Source (TPS). This article also compares the non-destructive nature of the MHW, and the TPS methods, to the destructive nature of the LFM. Research conducted on homogenous materials produced comparable results using all three transient methods. However, when testing non-homogenous materials, such as ...
