Thermal conductivity models for carbon/liquid crystal polymer composites

Various polyacrylonitrile carbon fillers (Ketjenblack carbon black, Thermocarb synthetic graphite, Fortafil 243 carbon fiber, and Panex 30 carbon fiber) were added to a thermoplastic matrix in the hopes of generating a thermally conductive resin that could be used as bipolar plates in fuel cells. These composites were then tested for through-plane thermal conductivity using the Nielsen model which was a function of the single filler volume fraction. The authors also developed a ...

Improving the thermal conductivity and shape-stabilization of phase change materials using nanographite additives

Two different sets of phase change materials were made by adding either graphene or exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets (xGnP) to paraffin in hot toluene. The thermal and stability properties of these newly synthesized composites were then studied using the TPS method. The addition of xGnP led to a higher thermal conductivity while the addition of graphene led to a higher electrical conductivity. Graphene was found to be better at stabilizing the ...

Measuring thermal conductivities of anisotropic synthetic graphite-liquid crystal polymer composites

Synthetic graphite particles were added to a liquid crystal polymer and then these composites were tested for through-plane and in-plane thermal conductivity using the TPS method. The authors expanded on an empirical model created to determine the relationship between thermal conductivity and volume percent of filler. This empirical model can now be used to approximate the in-plane thermal conductivities for a range of applications....

Flame retardancy through carbon nanomaterials: carbon black, multiwall nanotubes, expanded graphite, multi-layer graphene and graphene in polypropylene

This research aims to determine the effect of altering filler particle sizes and shapes, on the thermal and mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP). Fillers such as thermally reduced graphite oxide (TRGO), multi-layer graphene (MLG250), carbon black (CB), multiwalled nanotubes (MWNT) and expanded graphite (EG), were added to the PP base. A thermal analyzer was used to measure the thermal conductivity of the various PP composites. Results determined that the PP ...

Parameter Optimization for Measuring Thermal Properties of Electronic Materials using the Transient Plane Source Technique

In the electronic industry, manufacturers depend on accurate thermal conductivity testing methods to characterize their new products, and perform quality control maintenance on continuing materials. This paper assesses the ability of the Transient Plane Source (TPS) technique to accurately characterize newly developed materials, for their use in novel electronic applications. Using the TPS technique, various silicone based electronic materials, of differing filler contents, were thermally characterized and examined for their ...
