In situ polymerized nanocomposites: Polystyrene/CNT and Poly(methyl methacrylate)/CNT composites

A series of polymer-matrix composites were synthesized by using a variety of carbon nanotubes (single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)) and a polymer matrix (either polystyrene (PS) or poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)). Different surfactants and polymerization methods were also used in order to generate a wide range of different composites. These different composites were all tested for thermal and electrical conductivity and characterized ...

Synergetic effect of thermal conductive properties of epoxy composites containing functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes and aluminum nitride

This study looked at the use of two different fillers to improve the thermal properties of an epoxy resin. The two fillers were multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and aluminum nitride (AlN). Through the use of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) and a zirconate coupling agent the MWCNTs and AlN particles respectively were added to the epoxy resin. Through the use of 1 vol.% MWCNT and 25 vol.% AlN the researchers were able to ...

Thermal properties of the optically transparent pore-free nanostructured yttria-stabilized zirconia

Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) was synthesized by the spark plasma sintering process to generate pore-free, homogenous bulk samples that were then tested for thermal conductivity, which was measured by two separate methods: TPS and LFT. The TPS method was found to be better for measuring of thermal conductivity in this specific case. Using the phonon-hopping model (PHM) the authors were able to determine how grain boundaries of the bulk samples affected ...

Microstructure and Thermal Conductivity of Hydrated Calcium Silicate Board Materials

Two calcium silicate boards of different densities, porosities and pore size were analyzed for their thermal properties, specifically thermal conductivity. The boards were heated from room temperature to 400°C and the thermal conductivity was monitored during this time. A separate experiment 'aged' the boards first by heating at 1000°C for 4 hours before testing the thermal conductivity from room temperature to 400°C once again. The experimental results were compared with three ...

Influence of core materials on thermal properties of melamine-formaldehyde microcapsules

A series of melamine-formaldehyde microcapsules were synthesized using an in-situ polymerization and subsequently characterized for their thermal and structural properties. SEM and FT-IR were used to investigate the structural properties and DSC and TGA were used to investigate the thermal properties. The authors concluded that the thermo-physical properties of the microcapsules were related to the synthesis conditions and the core content of the capsules....
