The transient plane source technique (TPS) to measure thermal conductivity and its potential as a tool to detect in-homogeneities in metal foams

The present study used the transient plane source (TPS) technique to measure the thermal conductivity of a series of AlSi7 metal foams prepared by the powder metallurgical route. The main difference between the different foam samples was their density, which led to a change in thermal conductivity. In addition to measuring thermal conductivity, the TPS sensor was used to detect in-homogeneities by placing it on each face of a cube ...

Effects of Impurity Content on the Sintering Characteristics of Plasma-Sprayed Zirconia

Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) powders containing varying amounts of SiO2 and Al2O3 impurities were plasma sprayed onto metallic substrates and subsequently investigated. The authors were interested in how the impurities affected sintering rates, thermal conductivity, linear contraction, and pore size and architecture among other things. The YSZ coatings were heat treated at 1400°C for 10 hours and then analyzed for the properties mentioned above. A machine was used to measure the ...

A novel sebacic acid/expanded graphite composite phase change material for solar thermal medium-temperature applications

Sebacic acid (SA) can be absorbed into the pores of expanded graphite (EG) to form a SA/EG composite phase change material (PCM). There is no chemical interaction between the SA and EG, they are merely integrated. The optimal amount of SA was found to be 85 wt.% of the total mixture. The 85 wt.% composite had a phase change temperature of ~ 128°C, with a latent heat of ~ 187 J/g. The thermal ...

Studies on Preparation and Property Researches of EP/SiC Thermal Conductivity Composites

Epoxy resin/silicon carbide (Ep/SiC) composites were prepared by the casting method and subsequently characterized for their mechanical and thermal properties. It was determined that an increasing mass fraction of SiC in the epoxy resin resulted in increasing thermal conductivity of the composites. Using 50 wt.% SiC resulted in a thermal conductivity of 0.7152 W/mK, which is three times that of pure epoxy resin. Mechanical properties peaked with 10 wt.% SiC. ...

Porous mullite ceramics with low thermal conductivity prepared by foaming and starch consolidation

Using industrial grade mullite powder and a foaming and starch consolidation process, a series of porous mullite ceramics were prepared. These ceramics were analyzed by a thermal constants analyzer, and it was determined that the ceramics had low thermal conductivities and would make good thermal insulators. The porosity of the synthesized ceramics can be controlled by the sintering temperature and by adjusting solid loading. The ceramics were subjected to theoretical ...
