Gas Hydrate Formation and Its Thermal Conductivity Measurement

The thermal conductivity of combination gas hydrate and combination gas-hydrate sand mixtures was investigated in this article. Combination gas hydrate was found to have a positive relationship with thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity of gas hydrate bearing sand was found to be 1.2 W/mK. This value is much lower than that of tetrahydrofuran bearing sand, due to a 'wall-creeping' effect that occurred during the sample creation. The authors worked to ...

Experimental Evaluation of Thermal Properties of Grouting Materials

This article studies the thermal properties of grout used in geothermal energy applications. A number of different cement based sealants were analyzed by the authors to understand how the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity change as they are exposed to conditions similar to what they withstand when they are in use. Moisture content was of particular importance, as the porous grouts easily absorb the groundwater that they come in contact ...

Effect of the chain on thermal conductivity and thermal boundary conductance of long chain n-alkanes using molecular dynamics and transient plane source techniques

This Master's Thesis researched thermal transport at the nanoscale level in n-alkanes, and specifically focused on the effect of length of long chain n-alkane molecules on the thermal conductivity. A combination of transient measurements using the TPS method and molecular dynamics simulations were used in this research. The TPS method measured the thermal conductivity of three solid n-alkanes. Overall, the author concluded that there was an increase in thermal conductivity ...

Thermal Properties of Oil Palm Shell Lightweight Concrete with Different Mix Designs

This study investigated the use of oil palm shell as an additive for use in concrete. As the construction industry searches for methods to increase sustainability, using by-products produced by other industries to reduce the amount of cement required to produce concrete has become more popular, Oil palm shell is available in large quantities as an industrial waste product, is lightweight, and has the potential to help with thermal insulation. ...

Effect of Phase-Change Materials on Thermal and Mechanical Properties of Asphalt Mixtures

The goal of this paper was to incorporate Phase-Change Materials (PCMs) into asphalt in order to reduce the amount of heat that the pavement absorbs. Asphalt pavement is vastly preferred to cement for roads, however the downside is that it can reach extremely high temperatures during daylight hours, which can increase the heat island effect and cause deformation in the road surface. The thermal and mechanical properties of asphalt with ...
