New biobased foams from wood byproducts

Biobased foams derived from lignins and tanins were produced by mechanical frothing and curing. The obtained foams did not crack after drying. The foams were found to be good thermal insulators with thermal conductivities ranging from 0.035 to 0.055 Wm-1K-1....

Core-shell structure design of pulverized expandable graphite particles and their application in flame-retardant rigid polyurethane foams

The authors describe a synthesis method for a series of pulverized expandable graphite (pEG)/melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin core-shell structure particles. The particles are also added into rigid polyurethane foams (RPUF) to characterize the flame-retardant, mechanical, and thermal insulation properties of the RPUF/pEG-MF composites. It was found that the pEG/MF particles showed good flame-retardant performance in the composites by providing a physical barrier effect....

In-situ synthesis and attachment of colloidal ZnO nanoparticles inside porous carbon structures

This study investigates the properties of a material to be used as an energy storage medium that can use energy stored from the summer months, and then release it during the winter. The proposed material uses a graphite foam, with ZnO coatings with a flower like morphology, to house a sugar alcohol phase change material (PCM). The thermal conductivity of the material was measured using a transient plane source (TPS) ...

Preparation and thermal characterization of composite -oeParaffin/Red Brick- as a novel form-stable of phase change material for thermal energy storage

This study is to determine the thermal properties of a paraffin/red brick composite to determine its viability as a form-stable phase change material. Extended graphite was also added to the composite to improve its thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity for this material was measured using a transient plane source (TPS) method. By adding the paraffin, the thermal conductivity of the composite increase, also by adding extended graphite the thermal ...

Preparation and thermal properties of UV-curable polyacrylate-gold nanocomposite foams

The purpose of this study was to fabricate and analyze the physical properties of polyacrylate–gold nanocomposites (PGNs) with gold nanoparticles (GNPs) as their nucleation agents. The transient plane source (TPS) method was used to measure the thermal properties of the polyacrylate–gold nanocomposite foams (FPGNs) and PGNs. Results showed that the addition of GNPs improved thermal conductivity of the PGN materials, but as the size of GNPs increased, the ...
