Combination of Transient Plane Source and Slug Calorimeter Measurements to Estimate the Thermal Properties of Fire Resistive Materials

Using a combination of transient plane source (TPS) technique and slug calorimetry, 4 commercially available fire resistive materials (FRMs) are studied from room temperature to 1000°C. The materials studied in this report are two gypsum-based and two calcium-silicate based materials. These materials are heterogeneous and thus when heated to elevated temperatures, the microstructure of the materials may be compromised and various reactions and phase changes may take place over the course ...

Applicability of the transient plane source method to measure the thermal conductivity of low-density polyethylene foams

Using the transient plane source (TPS) method, the thermal conductivities of a series of crosslinked closed-cell polyethylene foams were measured. The experimental values obtained were compared to measurements made by a steady-state method (heat-flow meter). Through the use of the TPS technique, it was possible to observe how physical characteristics such as cell size, density and carbon black content affected the overall thermal conductivity. The authors found that the trends ...

Thermoelectric properties of n-type Ca(1-x)Bi(x)Mn(1-y)Si(y)O(3-delta) (x = y = 0.00, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, and 0.05) system

CaMnO3 has been proposed for use in thermoelectric materials, due to its favourable thermoelectric properties. In this article, the effect of doping using bismuth and silicon to replace calcium and manganese respectively has been studied. Important properties of the doped compounds measured include thermopower, thermal conductivity, and electrical resistance. Different amounts of dopant are used, and it was determined that the compound Ca0.98Bi0.02Mn0.98Si0.02O3 has the highest ...

Experimental Measurements of Thermal Conductivity of Wood Species in China: Effects of Density, Temperature, and Moisture Content

The authors selected 5 types of softwood species and 5 types of hardwood species that are commonly grown and used for construction in China for thermal analysis. Not only was thermal conductivity measured, but its dependence on moisture content, density and temperature of the wood samples was also investigated. Thermal conductivity was found to increase with increasing density of the wood sample and increasing moisture content. Thermal conductivity was also found to ...

Porous mullite ceramics with low thermal conductivity prepared by foaming and starch consolidation

Using industrial grade mullite powder and a foaming and starch consolidation process, a series of porous mullite ceramics were prepared. These ceramics were analyzed by a thermal constants analyzer, and it was determined that the ceramics had low thermal conductivities and would make good thermal insulators. The porosity of the synthesized ceramics can be controlled by the sintering temperature and by adjusting solid loading. The ceramics were subjected to theoretical ...
