Measurement of through-plane effective thermal conductivity and contact resistance in PEM fuel cell diffusion media

A study of the through-plane thermal conductivity of various gas diffusion layer materials (GDL) and the thermal contact resistance between the GDL and an electrolytic iron surface as a function of compression load. These factors were anaylized with the intention of gaining knowledge about in-situ fuel cells. Thermal conductivity measurements were taken by a modified version of the guarded heat flux meter ...

Insulation rigid and elastic foams based on albumin

This article discusses the creation and characterization of albumin based rigid and elastic foams. These foams were created using formaldehyde as the hardener for the protein, while camphor was used as the plasticizer. Crosslinking was carried out using a traditional or microwave oven. Samples differed in the amount of water, formaldehyde, and camphor added, and in the amount of time that they spent in the oven. The thermal conductivity was ...

Chemical modification of tannin/furanic rigid foams by isocyanates and polyurethanes

Polymeric tannin/furanic foams fortified with polyurethane (PUR) and 4,4’ diphenylmethane diisocyanate (pMDI) were prepared. The thermo-physical and mechanical properties of the produced foams were investigated experimentally.  It was found that since there were a number of active isocyanate groups on the PUR that was used, there was no difference in adding PUR or pMDI to the foams, and so only the results for pMDI were presented. It was found that ...

Modification of tannin based rigid foams using oligomers of a hyperbranched poly(amine-ester)

This paper examined the synthesis of hyperbranched polymers (HBPs) and how their hydroxyl end groups help form networks in tannin-based foams. A thermal analyzer (TPS) measured the thermal conductivity of the foam samples using the transient plane source (TPS) method. Results showed that modified foams retained their thermal insulation properties even with the addition of oligomeric precursors. This gives good indication that the addition of hydroxyl-terminated oligomeric precursors to tannin ...

Tailoring the structure of cellular vitreous carbon foams

The authors set out to prepare cellular vitreous carbon (CVC) foams with varying thermal and physical properties. This was accomplished by using tannin-based resin modified by different isocyanates in varying amounts. Three different experimental procedures were used to prepare foams with different physical and thermal properties. Physical properties of the foams studied include density, as well as pore volume, pore size and cell diameter. The transient plane source (TPS) technique ...
