Critical Review of Industrial Techniques for Thermal-Conductivity Measurements of Thermal Insulation Materials

The ability of leading thermal conductivity measurement techniques to be applied to the thermal measurement of thermally insulated materials was investigated. Researchers required that the equipment be able to operate between temperatures of 250 and 800°C. The equipment studied included the Transient Plane Source, the laser flash technique, the guarded heat flow meter, the transient hot wire instrument, and the guarded hot plate apparatus. Variables considered by the investigators included price, ...

Using transient plane source sensor for determination of thermal properties of vacuum insulation panels

Researchers at the Chalmers University of Technology used the transient plane source (TPS) method to propose a technique for testing layered materials of a low conductive core, coated in a highly conductive thin film. The accuracy of the method to evaluate isotropic materials was tested prior to testing the ability of the TPS to analyze layered materials. Value differences were noted between the simulated and the measured temperature increases of ...

Novel lightweight and highly thermally insulative silica aerogel-doped poly (vinyl chloride)-coated fabric composite

In this research silica aerogels were incorporated into PVC fabrics by the research team to improve the overall performance of the fabrics. The aerogel was added in percent fractions of 0, 2, 3, and 4%. Comprehensive analysis of physical and mechanical properties was also performed. Thermal conductivity measurements revealed that the addition of the silica aerogel had reduced the thermal conductivity of the fabric; when 4% silica was added, the thermal conductivity dropped by 26%. As ...

Thermal Properties of Oil Palm Shell Lightweight Concrete with Different Mix Designs

This study investigated the use of oil palm shell as an additive for use in concrete. As the construction industry searches for methods to increase sustainability, using by-products produced by other industries to reduce the amount of cement required to produce concrete has become more popular, Oil palm shell is available in large quantities as an industrial waste product, is lightweight, and has the potential to help with thermal insulation. ...

High-temperature thermal conductivity of ceramic fibers

This article describes comprehensive testing performed to increase understanding of how the thermal conductivity of ceramic fibers is affected. Non fibrous material content, temperature, and pressure were the main parameters investigated. Three different ceramic fiber samples were used in the research. Researchers discovered that the incorporation of aluminum reduced the thermal conductivity and consequently improved the insulation performance of the sample. An increase in pressure increased the thermal conductivity of ...
