Hydronic Pavement (HP) is a potential alternative method of spreading sand and salt on slippery road surfaces through embedded pipes that circulate brine, oils, or glycol-water. The present study analyzes the thermal properties involved in designing a HP system. The transient plane source method was used to analyze thermal properties of asphalt with various sensor sizes. Results showed that thermal conductivity varied around 6-14% based on the different depths of ...
This paper analyzes the effects of temperature and air humidity on the thermophysical properties of laterite rocks. Thermal conductivity was measured using a thermal analyzer instrument and the sample and sensor were placed in an airtight humidity chamber. In this method, the TPS element acted as both a temperature sensor and heating element. Thermal conductivity was found to increase by 14.7% with an increase in relative humidity of ambient air....
A comparative study was conducted on the properties of lightweight cementitious composites (LWCCs) mixed with four types of filler particles; EPS beads, dry-expanded plastic microspheres, hollow glass microspheres, and fly ash cenospheres. Thermal conductivity was tested using the transient plane source method. Results showed that thermal conductivity of LWCCs are dictated by the volume of lightweight functional filler (LWF) used and are insensitive to the type of LWF....
This article summarizes thermal properties testing on granular salt that has been consolidated under a wide range of temperature, stress, and moisture conditions. Thermal property measurements were taken on four different sample groups: laboratory-consolidated granular salt using domal and bedded salt types, granular salt that was consolidated in situ, polycrystalline salt cores, and a single crystal of halite. Thermal conductivity was measured with transient plane source method. Results show thermal ...
Deicing and anti-icing performance of an innovative polyurethane pavement surface layer that replaces asphalt binder was studied. Thermal properties of polyurethane concrete and asphalt concrete were measured using a Thermal Constants Analyzer with transient plane source (TPS) method. Results found that polyurethane concrete had similar thermal conductivity to asphalt concrete, but a much greater specific heat. Polyurethane was also found to have a better anti-icing and deicing performance compared to ...
