Low thermal conductivity and rapid synthesis of n-type cobalt skutterudite via a hydrothermal method

Researchers are currently developing ways to produce thermoelectric materials, such as skutterudites, with low lattice thermal conductivity. In this paper, a hydrothermal synthesis procedure was developed to fabricate CoSb3 compounds. A thermal constant analyzer measured the thermal conductivity of three CoSb3 samples using the transient plane source (TPS) method. Results showed that thermal conductivity increased with decreasing temperature, and was much lower for the hydrothermal-synthesized CoSb3 samples than other fabrication ...

Thermal conductivity and dynamic mechanical property of glycidyl methacrylate-grafted multiwalled carbon nanotube/epoxy composites

The purpose of this this study was to graft polymer chains onto the surface of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to examine the morphology and thermal properties of the epoxy composites in comparison to multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). A thermal analyzer measured the thermal conductivity of the nanocomposites using the transient plane source (TPS) technique. Results showed that the addition of Glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) to the MWCNTs/epoxy composites significantly enhanced thermal ...

The heat is on: graphene applications

As electronic devices approach nanometer scales, heat distribution becomes nonuniform and hot spots begin to form. Integrating graphene into nanoelectronics enhances thermal conductivity and heat flow which mitigates hot spots. In this experiment, large quantities of graphene were produced and thermal conductivity was measured by the transient plane source (TPS) method using an instrument. Results showed that the addition of graphene greatly improved the thermal conductivity of the thermal interface ...

Ultralow cost reticulated carbon foams from household cleaning pad wastes

In this paper, cost efficient RVC foams were fabricated from household cleaning pad waste (CPW) and sucrose. A thermal analyzer measured the thermal conductivity of the RVC foams using the transient plane source (TPS) method. Results showed that the thermal conductivity of the CPW foams were significantly lower than Ultramet’s RVC foams which are highly insulative. This study proved that it is possible to reproduce low-cost carbon foams from ...

Characterization of anisotropic and irregularly-shaped materials by high-sensitive thermal conductivity measurements

The transient plane source (TPS) technique has a wide range of applications because of its capability to test solids, liquids, powders, and anisotropic materials over a range of sizes. Thermal properties of thin films and coatings can also be characterized using the TPS method if the samples are placed between the sensor and a bulk background. To minimize errors with the TPS method, use identical materials on each side of ...
