Composite Propellant Based on a New Nitrate Ester

The use of 2,3-hydroxymethyl-2,3-dinitro-1,4-butanediol tetranitrate (SMX) as an oxidizer for solid composite rocket propellants was evaluated by the authors. SMX is an attractive alternative to the oxidizer used more traditionally, ammonium perchlorate (AP) because it is less toxic to the environment. It was found that SMX is very similar to AP in its handling characteristics, and thermal diffusivity; however, its thermal conductivity was lower than that of AP....

Investigation on Thermal Conductivity, Viscosity and Stability of Nanofluids

The thermal conductivity, viscosity, and stability of nanofluids were evaluated to determine how varying experimental conditions can affect these properties. It was determined that increasing the concentration, temperature, and time spent sonicating the nanofluids can increase the thermal conductivity, while the addition of alcohol caused a decrease in thermal conductivity. Furthermore, it was found that the shape of the particles has an effect on the measured thermal conductivity. It was ...

Mechanical and thermo-physical properties of high-density polyethylene modified with talc

High-density polyethylene-talc-carbon black composites were prepared with varying amounts of talc to determine its effect on the thermo-physical properties of the composites. Carbon black was added in a content of 3.5 wt. % because it was previously determined that the mechanical properties of the composites were depreciated at higher loadings. It was found that the addition of talc enhanced the mechanical properties, as well as the thermal conductivity, and thermal diffusivity. The ...

Aggregate’s influence on thermophysical concrete properties at elevated temperature

The thermal and physical properties of concrete were investigated at high temperature to determine how these properties might change in the event of a fire. The influence of the type and content of aggregate was also investigated. It was found that the degradation and mass loss of concretes depends on the type of aggregate used. It was also determined that the porosity of concretes increases as temperature increases, and that ...

Understanding in crystallization of polyethylene: the role of boron nitride (BN) particles

The authors examine the melting and crystallization behavior of a polyethylene/boron nitride composite to understand an unexpected exothermic peak when the BN content was greater than 10 wt. %. Based on these observations, an optimal annealing temperature of the composite was investigated to enhance its thermal conductivity. The appearance of the peak was determined to depend on the different nucleated capability of the different BN aggregates in local area. An annealing ...
