An improved transient plane source method for measuring thermal conductivity of thin films: Deconvoluting thermal contact resistance

This study experiments with the new and improved transient plane source (TPS) method for measuring the thermal conductivity of thin-films. The existing TPS method for measuring thin-films experiences the effect of thermal contact resistance. In this experiment, a thermal constants analyzer is used to investigate the precision and efficacy of the new method. This modified method looks to resolve the issues surrounding contact resistance, with eliminating the need for reference ...

Innovant agromaterials formulated with flax shaves and proteinic binder: Process and characterization

Agro-composite materials were produced from flax shaves and the properties of these composites were determined experimentally. The structure and morphology of the composites was determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and their thermal conductivities were determined using the transient plane source method. These properties, as well as mechanical, hydric, and acoustic properties were determined as a function of the structure and size of the flax shaves....

Thermal energy storage characteristics of Cu–H2O nanofluids

The ability of Cu-H2O nanofluids to perform as phase change materials (PCMs) is investigated. The supercooling behavior of the nanofluids was determined as a function of copper nanoparticle concentration. The contact angle and thermal conductivity of this PCM were also determined experimentally. Based on the experimental results, the authors conclude that these nanofluids could be useful in thermal energy storage applications....

A Comparative Study on Thermal Conductivity and Rheology Properties of Alumina and Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotube Nanofluids

Numerical models for the calculation of thermal conductivity and rheology behavior of alumina and multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanofluids were evaluated by determining these properties experimentally and comparing the results to the models. The thermal conductivity was measured by the transient plane source method, and the dynamic viscosity was determined using a rotational rheometer. A new model was then developed for these nanofluids, including the effects of interfacial thermal resistance. ...

Thermal properties and rheological behavior of water based Al2O3 nanofluid as a heat transfer fluid

Polyactic acid (PLA)-micro hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)-graphene nanoplatelet (GNP) polymer composites were prepared, and the effects of varying filler contents on the thermal and mechanical properties of the polymer composites were investigated. It was determined that the addition of the GNPs resulted in a decrease in thermal conductivity in comparison to a PLA-hBN composite unless the GNP:hBN ratio was 1:1, where the thermal conductivity was equal to that ...
