Thermal conductivity improvement of composite carbon foams based on tannin-based disordered carbon matrix and graphite fillers

Composite carbon foams were prepared by mixing tannin-based resin with various graphite powders in an effort to improve the thermal conductivity relative to pristine carbon foams in order to use them as hosts for phase-change materials. It was found that using graphite powder with smaller particle sizes resulted in foams with a higher bulk density than those prepared with an equal amount of larger graphite particles, this increased density resulted ...

Composites of Sulfonated Polystyrene-block-Poly (ethylene-ran-butylene)-block-Polystyrene and Graphite-Polyoxometalate: Preparation, Thermal and Electrical Conductivity

Sulfonated polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene-ran-butylene)-block-polystyrene (SPSPB) was used as a polymer matrix to create polymeric nanocomposites using graphite (G) and graphite-polyoxometalate (G-POM) as fillers. It was found that the nanocomposites had higher thermal and electrical conductivities than SPSPB alone, and that both the thermal and the electrical conductivity increased with increasing filler concentration. At all filler contents tested, the SPSPB/G-POM had both a higher thermal conductivity and a higher electrical ...

Thermal property measurement and heat storage analysis of LiNO3/KCl – expanded graphite composite phase change material

A novel composite phase change material (PCM) composed of LiNO3/KCl with expanded graphite (EG) as a filler was prepared and investigated to determine if it had potential for use in solar energy storage applications. The addition of the expanded graphite did not significantly alter the melting temperature in comparison with the eutectic LiNO3/KCl PCM; however, the latent heat of fusion did significantly decrease with increasing mass fractions of ...

Synergistic Effects and Modeling of Thermally Conductive Resins for Fuel Cell Bipolar Plate Applications

Conductive carbon fillers (carbon black, carbon fiber, and synthetic graphite particles) were added to Vectra A950RX liquid crystal polymer and the axial and radial thermal conductivities were determined experimentally for each composite. The addition of Thermocarb TC-300 synthetic graphite caused the largest increase in thermal conductivity, with in-plane thermal conductivity values reaching greater than 20 W/m K which is the minimum value for use in fuel cells. Mathematical models ...

Core-shell structure design of pulverized expandable graphite particles and their application in flame-retardant rigid polyurethane foams

The authors describe a synthesis method for a series of pulverized expandable graphite (pEG)/melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin core-shell structure particles. The particles are also added into rigid polyurethane foams (RPUF) to characterize the flame-retardant, mechanical, and thermal insulation properties of the RPUF/pEG-MF composites. It was found that the pEG/MF particles showed good flame-retardant performance in the composites by providing a physical barrier effect....
