Engineering improvement of NaAlH4 system

This article is based on research that has been done to improve hydrogen storage systems with on-board reversible metal hydrides. The study involved the compaction of the sodium aluminum hydride particles, as well as the addition of either aluminum or expanded natural graphite (ENG) to the powders to determine how their addition affects the thermal conductivity. It was found that the compaction of the powders improved the volumetric capacity of ...

Experimental study of the thermal properties of composite stearic acid / coffee grounds / graphite for thermal energy storage

Composite phase change materials were prepared using stearic acid, coffee grounds, and graphite. The coffee grounds were used as a supporting material for the stearic acid, and the graphite was added in an effort to enhance the thermal conductivity of the composite. The composites were characterized by SEM and FT-IR, the thermal conductivity was determined by the phase change temperature and latent heat were determined by differential scanning calorimetry. The ...

Effects of carbon fillers on the thermal conductivity of highly filled liquid-crystal polymer based resins

Carbon/liquid-crystal polymer composites were formulated. Composites containing one of three types of carbon filler, composites containing two types of carbon filler, and composites containing all three types of carbon filler were prepared to test not only the effect of each filler on the thermal conductivity of the composite, but also the effect of combining fillers. The anisotropic method on a TPS system was used for the thermal conductivity measurements. ...

Theoretical and experimental investigation of a closed sorption thermal storage prototype using LiCl/water

Consolidated water sorbents with varying densities were prepared by adding expanded graphite treated with sulphuric acid to activated carbon-lithium chloride composites for use as a lab-scale prototype for thermal energy storage. The sorption reactor prototype that was designed was unable to reach the 1 kWh heat storage target. Further research will be done with the goal of developing a 15 kWh reactor which would be capable of meeting the heating demand of ...

RT100/expand graphite composite phase change material with excellent structure stability, photo-thermal performance and good thermal reliability

The goal of this work was to produce a new high performance PCM, using a combination of RT 100 (paraffinic hydrocarbons) with expanded graphite (EG). The resulting composite performed extremely well in quality testing. Thermal conductivity was measured using the TPS method, and was found to be much higher in the composite than it was in the basic RT 100 materials. Thermal conductivity did not decrease during melting cycles. The ability of ...
