Effect of filler arrangement and networking of hexagonal boron nitride on the conductivity of new thermal management polymeric composites

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) was used as filler in varying concentrations to form composite polymers with polyactic acid, polyamide, and polyphenylene sulfide. The objective of this work was to produce a composite polymer with a high thermal conductivity for use as electronics packaging. It was determined that although thermal conductivity increased with increasing filler content, it was not necessarily due to the increased number of filler particles present, but rather ...

Comparative Studies on Thermal Performance of Conic Cut Twist Tape Inserts with SiO2 and TiO2 Nanofluids

In an effort to enhance heat transfer in the laminar flow regime of a heating duct, TiO2 and SiO2 nanoparticles were added to water to create nanofluids with a higher thermal conductivity than that of the water alone. Twist-tape was also used to enhance heat transfer within the duct. The thermal conductivities of the nanofluids were measured using the Transient Plane Source  instrument. It was found that the use of ...

Properties of Nanocrystals-formulated Aluminosilicate Bricks

Seven different types of nanocrystals were used as additives in aluminosilicate bricks to determine if this is a valid method of decreasing the thermal diffusivity of the bricks for use as plant coating in the iron and steel industries. Each type of nanocrystal was added in  concentration percentages of 0.5, 1, and 2 wt. % to determine the effect of concentration on thermal transport and physical properties. It was found that all of the ...

Study of heat transfer and kinetics parameters influencing the design of heat exchangers for hydrogen storage in high-pressure metal hydrides

The development of hydrogen storage materials for use in light-duty vehicles is investigated in this paper, which is still a ways off until commercial use. High-pressure metal hydrides (HPMH) are specifically studied here, at varying temperatures. The transient plane source (TPS) technique is used to measure the thermal conductivity and specific heat of the prepared hydride materials. Porosity and density are also important physical factors to consider when dealing with ...

Thermophysical properties of styrene butadiene rubber filled with pine tree particles measured by the transient plane source technique

Using the transient plane source (TPS) technique, the effect of addition of pine tree particles to styrene butadiene rubber is studied. Thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, specific heat capacity and density were all investigated. Varying amounts of the pine tree filler particles were added to the polymer matrix in order to form composites. Increasing amounts of the pine tree filler resulted in higher thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity, with decreasing specific ...
