17th International Thermal Conductivity Conference Award Co-Winner 1981
Dr. Robert (‘Bobby’) Berman was University College’s first Fellow in physics. Berman specialized in thermodynamics and was an extremely influential and popular tutor in the college from 1955-83, remarkably tutoring one of the world’s most famous physicist, Stephen Hawking. As part of an elite cryogenics group of doctorate researchers, Berman worked on heat transport in solids at Clarendon Laboratory. Known for his kindness and generosity towards his students, Berman’s colleagues created the “Oxford-Berman Graduate Scholarship” in his honour.
