Kenneth E. Wilkes

25th International Thermal Conductivity Conference Award Co-Winner 1999

An exceptional research engineer, Ken Wilkes studied steady-state and transient methods to measure the thermophysical properties of metals, ceramics, graphite, and thermal insulation. As an international expert in thermophysics, Wilkes earned a B.S. and M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, and went on to receive a M.S. and Ph.D. in Condensed Matter Physics. Throughout his career he worked in R&D at the U.S. Naval Ordnance Laboratory, Battelle Memorial Institute, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Recipient of the ASTM Award of Appreciation and Award of Merit for his development and publication of standards for the insulation industry, Wilkes was an active participant in the ASTM Thermal Insulation Committee (C16) and served as chair for 6 years. His research has provided support for numerous C16 standards and his publications have been cited in more than ten ASTM standards.
