Towards Thermoconductive, Electrically Insulating Polymeric Composites with Boron Nitride Nanotubes as Fillers

In this experiment, the thermal conductivity of several composites, with varying matrix composition and boron nitride nanotubes fillers, was investigated. Poly(methyl methacrylate), polystyrene, poly(vinyl butyral) and poly(ethylene vinyl alcohol) were the matrix compositions analyzed. The results indicated that with the addition of the boron nitride nanotube fillers, there was a 20-fold increase in the thermal conductivity of the polymer. Several other properties were analyzed alongside of thermal ...

Effects of carbon fillers in thermally conductive polypropylene based resins

Researchers have determined the potential of increasing the thermal conductivity of insulating polymers by adding conductive fillers. One common application this may be used for, is fuel cell bipolar plates. In this article, researchers tested varying amounts of three different carbon fillers (black carbon, synthetic graphite particles, and carbon nanotubes), by adding them to polypropylene. Both single fillers and combination fillers were studied for their potential effects on the thermal ...

Thermal conductivity and structure of non-covalent functionalized graphene/epoxy composites

As technology advances, the need for inexpensive polymer-based composites possessing high thermal conductive properties has become more and more important. Previously, the addition of thermal conductive particles, such as alumina, boron nitride and alumina nitride, has caused an increase in the thermal conductivity of the composite. Although an increase in thermal conductivity is present, an increase in fabrication costs is also experienced as a higher quantity of particles is required, ...

Thermal conductive PS/graphite composites

Polystyrene (PS)/graphite thermal conductive nano-composites were prepared to verify the high thermal conductivity values with the addition of graphite, as well as the layered structure. The thermal conductivity of PS improved greatly in the presence of the graphite. Researchers used the Maxwell-Eucken model and the Agari model to evaluate thermal conductivity. For the purpose of improving the interfacial compatibility of PS/graphite, three PS fabrication methods were introduced to ...

Evaluation and identification of electrical and thermal conduction mechanisms in carbon nanotube/epoxy composites

This study primarily focuses on the electrical and thermal conductivity of nanoparticle filled epoxy resins.  Modification of polymers on a nanstructure level has revealed a new world of possibilities for multi-functional materials. Research has found that carbon nanotubes may have the potential to improve mechanical performance of conductive polymers. This research studies the thermal performance of the resins with respect to various types of carbon nanotubes, various concentrations of filler ...
