Thermal energy storage performance of paraffin-based composite phase change materials filled with hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets

A paraffin-based composite phase change material (PCM) was prepared by the addition of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanosheets to melted paraffin wax followed by vigorous stirring. The nanosheets were added in quantities ranging from 1 to 10 wt. %. A reference sample of pure paraffin was also prepared. It was determined that the addition of h-BN nanosheets resulted in an increase in thermal conductivity and that the melting and solidification rates were also ...

Photochemical Generation of Ag, Pd, and Pt Particles in Octane

Octane solutions containing metal salts were irradiated with 350 nm photons using oleoyl sarcosine as a particle stabilizer and benzophenone as a particle sensitizer to produce suspensions of nanometer-sized metal particles. The goal of this study was to prepare nanofluids with enhanced thermal conductivity in comparison to pure octane. It was found that the thermal conductivities were enhanced by the production of the nanofluids, with a 10 % enhancement being observed at 50oC....

Thermal Conductivity of TiO2 Nanotubes

The authors present a method of preparation of TiO2 nanotubes by alkaline treatment (with NaOH) of TiO2 particles followed by acid-washing and annealing treatment. Theoretical and experimental studies on the thermal conductivity of TiO2 nanotubes is also presented. The thermal conductivity values determined experimentally matched well with theoretical values obtained. It was found that TiO2 nanotubes had a lower thermal conductivity than the original TiO2 particles. This phenomenon was attributed ...

Tunable thermal conduction character of graphite-nanosheets-enhanced composite phase change materials via cooling rate control

Thermal energy storage (TES) is incredibly important to expanding the field of renewable energy. In this study, the authors look at the potential of composite phase change materials (PCMs) for use in this application. A ball milling method was used to exfoliate expanded graphite in nanosheets that could be added to eicosane to create composite materials. Composites with nanosheets of various sizes were created, and the effect of cooling rate ...

Effective thermal conductivity of CdS/ZnS nanoparticles embedded polystyrene nanocomposites

In this paper, thermal properties of CdS and ZnS nanoparticles are examined to understand heat transfer behavior through polystyrene (PS) composites. The transient plane source (TPS) method was used to measure the thermal conductivities of the CdS/PS and ZnS/PS nanocomposites. Results showed that the nanocomposites followed a similar increasing trend until a common temperature where each sample adopted a constant thermal conductivity. Overall, the ZnS/PS nanocomposites showed ...
