The effects of oil palm shell volume fractions on thermal conductivity for insulation concrete

The thermal properties of oil palm shell (OPS) are investigated to determine if it could be used as a lightweight aggregate for a concrete mixture. The thermal conductivity, diffusivity, and specific heat were all tested through a transient plane source (TPS) method. The thermal conductivity and diffusivity both increased as the volume fraction of OPS increased. This is because OPS is very porous which gives it an inherently low thermal ...

Fabrication of highly porous silica thermal insulators prepared by gelation-freezing route

The purpose of this study was to produce high porosity silica thermal insulators through gelation-freezing. The thermal conductivities of the insulators in relation to porosity and microstructure were measured by a thermal constant analyzer based on the transient plane source (TPS) method. The thermal conductivities of the S1 and S10 samples remained fairly constant despite temperature changes, and were mainly affected by solid and gas conduction....

Influence of environmental factors on the adsorption capacity and thermal conductivity of silica nano-porous materials

Aerogels have a wide range of properties that make them effective thermal insulators. However, these properties are lost when the materials absorb too much water. The goal of this experiment was to determine how temperature and humidity affect the insulative properties of silica nano-porous aerogels. A thermal constants analyzer measured the thermal conductivity of moist silica nano-porous materials using the transient plane source (TPS) method. Results showed that the thermal ...

Thermal characterization of a lightweight mortar containing expanded perlite for underground insulation

The shotcrete technique is a method used to pneumatically spray concrete at mine openings to provide insulative working environments. This study tested the thermal conductivity of Expanded Perlite Aggregate (EPA) to determine its effectiveness as an insulative material in conjunction with concrete for mining applications. A Thermal Constants Analyser TPS measured the thermal conductivity of the EPA composites using the transient plane source (TPS) method. Results showed that the addition ...

Ultralow cost reticulated carbon foams from household cleaning pad wastes

In this paper, cost efficient RVC foams were fabricated from household cleaning pad waste (CPW) and sucrose. A thermal analyzer measured the thermal conductivity of the RVC foams using the transient plane source (TPS) method. Results showed that the thermal conductivity of the CPW foams were significantly lower than Ultramet’s RVC foams which are highly insulative. This study proved that it is possible to reproduce low-cost carbon foams from ...
