Thermal Properties of a Supercooled Synthetic Sand-Water-Gas-Methane Hydrate Sample

The thermal properties of synthetic gas hydrate-bearing sediment samples were determined by the transient plane source method. The samples were made up of sand, water, gas, and methane hydrates, and these samples were supercooled to minimize the effects of the heat of fusion of methane hydrate on the thermal conductivity measurements. The thermal conductivity was found to increase with increasing methane hydrate saturation for saturations from 0-0.3. Thermophysical models were ...

TRISO Fuel Thermal Conductivity Measurement Instrument Development

The author presents a literature review of current methods of determining thermal conductivity in order to select the best method for measuring TRISO fuel compacts. Based on the properties of the sample, the guarded-comparative-longitudinal heat flow technique was selected and a system was assembled to perform this measurement....

Thermal Characterization of Nanostructures and Advanced Engineered Materials

As electronics get smaller and more powerful, the components within them that handle heat dissipation must also evolve. Increasing power density and rising hot spots must be accouted for and handled. In this PhD dissertation, the author studies materials for potential use as heat spreaders or insulators at the nanoscale to understand their thermal properties. Nanostructured superlattices have shown to be highly effective in reducing the thermal conductivity of heat ...

In situ polymerization of methyl methacrylate/multi-walled carbon nanotube composites using cationic stearyl methacrylate copolymers as dispersants

Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/poly (methyl methacrylate) composites were prepared and their mechanical and physical properties were examined. An amphiphilic copolymer was used to aid in dispersing the MWCNTs throughout the composite. It was found that the use of this copolymer resulted in a good dispersal of the MWCNTs without drastically affecting the molecular weights of the composites, so it was concluded that the observed improvements in mechanical properties of ...

RT100/expand graphite composite phase change material with excellent structure stability, photo-thermal performance and good thermal reliability

The goal of this work was to produce a new high performance PCM, using a combination of RT 100 (paraffinic hydrocarbons) with expanded graphite (EG). The resulting composite performed extremely well in quality testing. Thermal conductivity was measured using the TPS method, and was found to be much higher in the composite than it was in the basic RT 100 materials. Thermal conductivity did not decrease during melting cycles. The ability of ...
