Thermal and optical characterization of natural and artificial marble for roof and external floor installations

The thermophysical properties of natural and artificial samples of marble were investigated to determine how the marble would respond to solar irradiation. The thermal conductivity, specific heat and density were all determined experimentally for the marble samples, and the thermal diffusivity was calculated using these properties. It was determined based on the thermal diffusivity values that heat travelled faster through the natural samples than it did through the artificial samples. ...

Enhanced thermal conductivity of n-octadecane containing carbon-based nanomaterials

The use of organic compounds as phase change materials (PCMs) is limited by the low thermal conductivity of these compounds. In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were dispersed in n-octadecane to determine if this nanocomposite PCM would have a higher thermal conductivity than that of pure n-octadecane. The thermal conductivity of the nanocomposite PCMs was measured using the transient plane source (TPS) method at mass ...

Thermal Properties of a Hercynian Granitic Rock: Data from a Deep Borehole (Almeida, Central Portugal)

Thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity and specific heat are investigated for a granite rock sample from a deep borehole in central Portugal. Thirty-three samples were divided into two groups based on the degree of metasomatic alteration. It was found that the average thermal conductivity for the samples in the group comprising the less altered samples was 2.90 ± 0.26 W/m K, and for the more altered samples, the average value was 2.95 ± 0.19 W/m ...

Thermal Conductivity Enhancement by using Nano-Material in Phase Change Material for Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage Systems

Al2O3, TiO2 nanoparticles, and carbon nanotubes were added to Iraqi paraffin wax in varying quantities to determine the optimum filler content for the enhancement of thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity was enhanced by 65 and 40% for samples containing 5 wt. % of Al2O3 and TiO2 nanoparticles, respectively. It was concluded that the addition of these nanoparticles to paraffin wax enhanced the thermal conductivity of the phase change material without sacrificing its ...

The influence of gaseous heat conduction to the effective thermal conductivity of nano-porous materials

The effective thermal conductivity of a commercial silica aerogel is determined at various gas pressures ranging from 0.001 Pa to 1 MPa in order to determine the contribution of gaseous heat conduction to the effective thermal conductivity of nano-porous materials. It was determined that the gas pressure had a significant effect on the effective thermal conductivity of the aerogel and that the contribution of gaseous heat conduction was greater than the gas ...
