Anisotropy in Thermal Transport Properties of Cast-y TiAl Alloys

The transient plane source (TPS) technique was used to determine the anisotropy of titanium aluminide bars with different microstructures. The thermal conductivity of the bars was measured at temperatures up to 700oC. It was determined that the anisotropy in the bars was approximately 15% at all temperatures....

Effect of temperature on thermal properties of spray applied fire resistive materials

This paper used the TPS to measure the thermal conductivity of several different spray applied fire resistive materials between a temperature of 20-1000°C. Mass loss and thermal strain were also investigated. These properties are crucial components of the material, and decide how effectively it will perform in the face of a fire. Temperature was found to have a significant impact on the thermal conductivity, mass loss and thermal strain. ...

Synthesis and characterization of silica aerogel and its composite materials

Composite silica aerogels were prepared using sodium silicate and ceramics fibers. The thermal conductivities of these composites were investigated to determine how effective they would be as thermal insulation. As temperature increased to 400oC, the thermal conductivity of these composites only increased from 0.0266 to 0.0572 W/(m·K). This indicates that these composites which have good structural and mechanical properties would be good thermal insulators during thermal processes....

Thermal conductivity of engineered bamboo composites

The thermal properties of engineered bamboo products were investigated as these products show promise for use as building materials due to their improved mechanical properties over traditional timber building materials. It was determined that the thermal conductivity was lower for the bamboo materials than for timber, which indicates that these materials could potentially be used in the construction of energy efficient buildings....

Cleaner production of the lightweight insulating composites: Microstructure, pore network and thermal conductivity

A porous matrix was prepared using low-density sawdust and a metakaolin-based geopolymer paste. The matrix was prepared in order to evaluate its performance as a thermally insulating building envelope. The matrices that had approximately 4 MPa of bi-axial four points flexural strength were prepared in a ratio of geopolymer paste:sawdust of between 1:1 and 1:1.5, and the thermal conductivity of these matrices was between 0.2-0.3 W/m·K....
