Enhancement of electrical, thermal and mechanical properties of carbon nanotube additive Se85Te10Ag5 glassy composites

A chalcogenide glass was prepared and doped with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in an effort to increase the electrical and thermal conductivity of the glass. The glass that was used in this study was Se85Te10Ag5 which was prepared by melt-quenched method. CNTs were added to the glass at 3 and 5 wt. % and the properties of the composite glasses were compared with those of the pure chalcogenide glass. It was found ...

Thermophysical properties of Zr–Cu–Al metallic glasses during crystallization

Zr-Cu-Al metallic glasses were formulated with differing compositions to determine their thermophysical properties. It was determined that by decreasing the zirconium content of the metallic glass, the thermal conductivity can be increased. The maximum value of thermal conductivity was found for the metallic glass with a composition of Zr:Cu:Al = 50:39.3:10.7 (at. %). It was found that although the metallic glasses did not crystallize with heat treatment below Tg, they did ...

Engineering thermal and mechanical properties of flexible fiber-reinforced aerogel composites

The authors present a method of fiber-reinforced aerogel composites by impregnation of four layers of aligned glass fibers into silica sol layer-by-layer. The effect of different fiber alignments, as well as the effect of fiber lamination on the mechanical strength of the silica aerogel composites was investigated. In addition to this, the thermal conductivity of each composite was determined. The objective of this work was to investigate whether it is ...

The Effects of Thermophysical Properties and Environmental Conditions on Fire Performance of Intumescent Coatings on Glass Fibre-Reinforced Epoxy Composites

The reaction to fire properties of three commercial coatings designed for steel structures were investigated. The coatings in this study were covering a glass fiber-reinforced epoxy composite. It was determined that the thermal barrier effectiveness of these coatings was dependent on the degree of expansion and the thermal conductivity of the expanded char. Using these two parameters, the required thickness of a coating that can enable a structure to withstand ...

One-pot synthesis, characterization and properties of acid-catalyzed resorcinol/formaldehyde cross-linked silica aerogels and their conversion to hierarchical porous carbon monoliths

Aerogels are ultra-light, insulative, porous materials that have a wide variety of applications. The aim of this study was to synthesize resorcinol/formaldehyde (RF) cross-linked silica aerogels in one pot by acid catalysis. A thermal constant analyzer measured the thermal conductivity of the RF/SiO2 aerogels using the transient plane source (TPS) method. Results showed that although the RF/SiO2 aerogels had a lower density, their thermal conductivities resembled those ...
