A simplified approach for predicting temperature profile in steel members with locally damaged fire protection

The structural integrity of steel members is jeopardized when fire insulation is partially lost. This paper examined the thermal and mechanical properties of fire insulation under elevated temperatures to further understand thermal gradients and develop preventative safety measures. A thermal analyzer measured the thermal conductivity of the insulation material using the transient plane source (TPS) method. Results show that thermal conductivity increases with temperature because the spray-applied fire resistance materials ...

Modification of tannin based rigid foams using oligomers of a hyperbranched poly(amine-ester)

This paper examined the synthesis of hyperbranched polymers (HBPs) and how their hydroxyl end groups help form networks in tannin-based foams. A thermal analyzer (TPS) measured the thermal conductivity of the foam samples using the transient plane source (TPS) method. Results showed that modified foams retained their thermal insulation properties even with the addition of oligomeric precursors. This gives good indication that the addition of hydroxyl-terminated oligomeric precursors to tannin ...

Thermally insulating and fire-retardant lightweight anisotropic foams based on nanocellulose and graphene oxide

The researchers used an instrument to measure the thermal properties (thermal conductivity and specific heat) of anisotropic thermally insulating foams produced by the mixing of nanocellulose, graphene oxide and sepiolite nanorods via the freeze-casting method. These anisotropic foams showed superior thermal properties when compared to expanded polystyrene (a common insulation material), and had a thermal conductivity value of 0.015 W/mK which is half the value for expanded polystyrene. Not only ...

Insulation materials for the building sector: a review and comparative analysis

When referring to maximizing the energy efficiency of a building, one must first look at the contents of the structure: the make-up of the interior and exterior walls and the contents of the buildings envelope. Generally, when we think of insulation, we think of thermal insulation, which protects us from the blistering, hot days in summer to the dreaded cold days of winter. However, when constructing a building one must ...
