Effective thermal conductivity of divided silica xerogel beds

The thermal conductivities of aerogels and xerogels were explored in order to determine how the solid content of each material affected the conductivity. Experimental considerations include testing at room temperature, under vacuum and also under various humidity conditions. Density was taken into account and it was found that the optimal density for the gels was 0.15 g/mL....

Simultaneous determination of thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of food and agricultural materials using a transient plane-source method

Since there was no literature on using the transient plane source method for the measurement of thermal conductivity and diffusivity of food products the authors did it themselves. They tested a variety of products including water, mineral oil, ethanol, beef, chicken and apples and determined that using the transient plane source method to simultaneously measure thermal conductivity and diffusivity was an accurate method....

Viscosity and thermal conductivity measurements of water-based nanofluids containing titanium oxide nanoparticles

This article looks at the thermal properties of titanium oxide (TiO2) based nanofluids and their applications as thermal vectors. The nanoparticle size was studied by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and the stability was measured by Zeta potential. The concentrations of TiO2 used ranged from 1 to 35% by mass in the water-based nanofluid. Thermal conductivity was measured and the effects of concentration of TiO2 and temperature on the thermal conductivity were studied. ...

Simultaneous measurement of the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of unconsolidated materials by the transient hot wire method

The authors present a new (at the time) design for the transient hot wire method. Using this method, the thermal conductivity of materials was measured by the slope of a temperature versus time line. The instrument can measure temperatures between 20°C and 200°C with pressure as low as 10 mTorr. The presented method gave good accuracy and precision....

Influence of pH on Nanofluids- Viscosity and Thermal Conductivity

This article outlines the effect of adding Al2O3 and Cu nanoparticles to water and measuring the thermal conductivities and viscosities of the mixtures. The effect of pH was taken into account and it was found that there are optimal pH values for each of the nanoparticle mixtures that give the highest thermal conductivities and lowest viscosities. Research shows that thermal conductivity and viscosity are closely related to each other. ...
