Comparative Studies on Thermal Performance of Conic Cut Twist Tape Inserts with SiO2 and TiO2 Nanofluids

In an effort to enhance heat transfer in the laminar flow regime of a heating duct, TiO2 and SiO2 nanoparticles were added to water to create nanofluids with a higher thermal conductivity than that of the water alone. Twist-tape was also used to enhance heat transfer within the duct. The thermal conductivities of the nanofluids were measured using the Transient Plane Source  instrument. It was found that the use of ...

Review of the high temperature mechanical and thermal properties of the steels used in cold formed steel structures – The case of the S280 Gd+Z steel

The mechanical and thermal properties of structural steel were examined at ambient and high temperature to evaluate the predictive models of current design codes. Tensile coupon tests were performed to evaluate the mechanical properties. Thermal elongation was determined using a high-temperature extensometer, while the thermal conductivity and specific heat capacity were determined using the transient plane source technique. Specifically, the slab method was used. The determined mechanical properties were used ...

Study of heat transfer and kinetics parameters influencing the design of heat exchangers for hydrogen storage in high-pressure metal hydrides

The development of hydrogen storage materials for use in light-duty vehicles is investigated in this paper, which is still a ways off until commercial use. High-pressure metal hydrides (HPMH) are specifically studied here, at varying temperatures. The transient plane source (TPS) technique is used to measure the thermal conductivity and specific heat of the prepared hydride materials. Porosity and density are also important physical factors to consider when dealing with ...

Thermal Properties of Magnetite Nanoparticle and Carbon Fiber Doped Epoxy Shape Memory Polymer

Carbon fiber and magnetite (Fe3O4)-doped epoxy memory shape polymers were prepared with 2.5% volume fraction of each dopant. These materials were doped in the hope of increasing the thermal performance of the polymers. Using the Thermal Constants Analyzer, thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity and specific heat of the doped polymers were measured. Specifically, the researchers were looking into changes exhibited near the transition temperature of the shape memory polymer of ...

Thermally insulating and fire-retardant lightweight anisotropic foams based on nanocellulose and graphene oxide

The researchers used an instrument to measure the thermal properties (thermal conductivity and specific heat) of anisotropic thermally insulating foams produced by the mixing of nanocellulose, graphene oxide and sepiolite nanorods via the freeze-casting method. These anisotropic foams showed superior thermal properties when compared to expanded polystyrene (a common insulation material), and had a thermal conductivity value of 0.015 W/mK which is half the value for expanded polystyrene. Not only ...
