A Novel Portable Absolute Transient Hot-Wire Instrument for the Measurement of the Thermal Conductivity of Solids

A new design was presented of a portable transient hot wire apparatus for measuring the thermal conductivity of solids. The design features a two-wire sensor with silicon layers, compact printed electronic board and a high-tech software suite that utilizes the Finite Elements Method to model heat flow. This methodology is 120x's faster than any previous approach and can reduce the number of ...

Thermophysical properties of lithium nitrate trihydrate from (253 to 353) K

Lithium nitrate trihydrate (LiNO3·3H2O) has many traits that are desirable for thermal energy storage (TES) materials. This study tests the thermophysical properties of LiNO3·3H2O between 253-353 K in comparison to effective TES materials: water and paraffin. A TPS system measured the thermal conductivity of the solid LiNO3·3H2O samples using the transient plane source (TPS) method. Results showed that LiNO3·3H2O had a higher ...

Temperature-dependent thermal conductivity of eicosane-based phase change materials with copper oxide nanoparticles

In this study, pure eicosane and eicosane-CuO solid composites were prepared using ambient and ice-water bath solidification methods. A Thermal Constants Analyzer measured the thermal conductivity of the samples using the transient plane source (TPS) technique. Results showed that for both solidification methods, composite thermal conductivity was independent of temperature up to a point, and the composites with the highest nanoparticle concentrations had the highest thermal conductivity. Although the composites ...
