Preparation and Insulation Property Studies of Thermoplastic PMMA-Silica Nanocomposite Foams

Poly(methyl methacrylate)-silica nanocomposite (PSN) foams were formulated for the comparison of the effect of vinyl-modified silica (VMS) and raw silica (RS) particles on cell structure, insulation properties, and insulation properties. It was found that those thermoplastic foams containing VMS particles had improved dispersion capability than those containing RS particles. The incorporation of VMS particles was found to reduce the cell size and increase the cell density of the ...

Porous thermal insulation materials derived from fly ash using a foaming and slip casting method

Coal fly ash was used as the base material for the formation of thermal insulation materials. The porosity of the produced materials ranged from 86.3-94.5 vol. %. The insulating materials were prepared by ball milling, followed by foaming assisted by the addition of K12, casting and drying, and finally sintering. No harmful chemicals were released to the environment during their preparation. It was found that the thermal conductivity of the samples ...

Composition Control and Thermoelectric Properties of Quaternary Chalcogenide Nanocrystals: The Case of Stannite Cu2CdSnSe4

The authors present a method of producing Cu2CdSnSe4 quaternary nanocrystals using a colloidal synthesis route that could be used for future industrial synthesis. The nanocrystals prepared showed great potential for use as a thermoelectric material due to their high thermoelectric figure of merit (up to 0.71) resulting from a high electrical conductivity and low thermal conductivity. The authors believed that these properties could be further tuned in order to increase ...

Thermal conductivity improvement of composite carbon foams based on tannin-based disordered carbon matrix and graphite fillers

Composite carbon foams were prepared by mixing tannin-based resin with various graphite powders in an effort to improve the thermal conductivity relative to pristine carbon foams in order to use them as hosts for phase-change materials. It was found that using graphite powder with smaller particle sizes resulted in foams with a higher bulk density than those prepared with an equal amount of larger graphite particles, this increased density resulted ...

Emulsion-templated porous carbon monoliths derived from tannins

The authors have prepared highly porous, monolithic, carbon polymerised high internal phase emulsions (carboHIPEs) using tannins as the base material. This material was considered to be one of the most environmentally friendly carboHIPEs to have been prepared based on the fact that it is almost entirely composed of plant-derived chemicals. It was determined that in terms of porosity and mechanical properties, these carboHIPEs compared well with others that had been ...
