Thermtest Announces Development of Revolutionary New Device

March 27, 2023

The Portable Thermal Chamber is a convenient and non-destructive instrument that measures the thermal performance of low-slope roofs.

Fredericton, New Brunswick – March 29, 2023: Using thermal resistance measurement technology licensed from the National Research Council of Canada, Thermtest will bring the innovative Portable Thermal Chamber technology to market and position Canada as a leader in building envelope thermal performance.

The low-slope roof is a key component of the building envelope and is commonly found on industrial, commercial, and institutional buildings.  However, the vast area of the low-slope roof can be prone to substantial heat loss if the roof assembly is inadequately insulated. Current practices to determine the thermal performance (R-value) of a roof either rely on theoretical estimates or require removing a piece of the roof to send for laboratory testing. The Portable Thermal Chamber will enable non-destructive, in-situ measurement of heat loss occurring through the roof. Building owners and operators can then make informed decisions to upgrade insulation and take other actions that contribute to energy and emission savings.

“We are excited to work with the National Research Council of Canada to commercialize this R-value measurement technology. The Portable Thermal Chamber aligns well with our advanced thermal conductivity instruments. Our engineering team values the opportunity to work on such a project, which has such significant benefits to the environment and insulation industry.” – Dale Hume, CEO of Thermtest

The expected benefits of the project include:

  • Producing an alternative method to existing destructive low-slope roof R-value testing.
  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions by providing industry and building owners with a clear indication of the heat and energy loss from a low-slope roof.
  • Bringing innovation and opportunities to Canada by leading the global initiative to reduce heat and energy wastage from commercial and residential buildings.

This piece of equipment has the potential to have a profound impact on the environment and the global roofing and insulation markets. The Portable Thermal Chamber is expected to launch in early 2024. Click here for more details.
