What is thermal conductivity testing?
Thermal conductivity is a material property that defines the intrinsic ability of a material to transfer or conduct heat. The heat conductivity occurs through molecular agitation and contact, and does not result in the bulk movement of the solid itself. Heat moves along a temperature gradient, from an area of high temperature and high molecular energy to an area with a lower temperature and lower molecular energy. This transfer will continue until thermal equilibrium is reached. The rate at which heat is transferred is dependent upon the magnitude of the temperature gradient, and the specific thermal characteristics of the material.
How is thermal conductivity measured?
For measuring thermal conductivity, there are a number of possible options, such as Guarded Heat Flow (GHP), Heat Flow Meter (HFM), Transient Hot Wire (THW) and more (see lists below). Each of them is suitable for a limited range of materials, depending on the thermal properties and temperature. Thermal conduction is the transfer of heat from one part of a body to another with which it is in contact.

Michael WatsonBluestar Silicones“We had to provide a new experimental product to a customer in just a couple of days with a technology that we had never used before. Our customer really needed to know the thermal conductivity of our new product as part of their evaluation. Thermtest understood that we were in a difficult situation due to the short development timeframe. They made an extra effort to test our material as soon as it arrived so that we could provide our customer with the thermal conductivity data they needed while they were performing their material evaluations. They take the time to listen up front, they choose the correct equipment and test methods to provide quality thermal conductivity testing results, and they make every effort to accommodate rush service requests. What more could you ask for?” |
