Comparative Studies on Thermal Performance of Conic Cut Twist Tape Inserts with SiO2 and TiO2 Nanofluids

In an effort to enhance heat transfer in the laminar flow regime of a heating duct, TiO2 and SiO2 nanoparticles were added to water to create nanofluids with a higher thermal conductivity than that of the water alone. Twist-tape was also used to enhance heat transfer within the duct. The thermal conductivities of the nanofluids were measured using the Transient Plane Source  instrument. It was found that the use of ...

Experimental measurement of thermophysical properties of oxide-water nano-fluids down to ice-point

Two series of nanofluids were prepared by the researchers, using water as the carrier fluid, and Al2O3 and TiO2 as the nanoparticles; up to 6% particle volume fraction was used. The thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of the nanofluids were measured using the transient plane source (TPS) technique, and dynamic viscosity was also measured. The amount of nanoparticle volume fraction affected the value of thermal conductivity, but the nanoparticle cluster ...

Experimental analysis of heat transfer and friction factor of nanofluid as a coolant in a corrugated plate heat exchanger

Al2O3 nanofluids were prepared with 2, 3, and 4 vol% Al2O3 nanoparticles in water for use as a coolant in plate heat exchangers. Using the transient plane source (TPS) technique, the thermophysical properties of the nanofluids were studied. Correlation equations were obtained for Nusselt number and the friction factor for the nanofluids and water. Less nanofluid is required to produce the same amount of cooling than water....

Determining the thermal conductivity of liquids. Part II: Establishing an accurate and repeatable experimental methodology

The authors state that the TPS technique isn't an accurate method for the measurement of thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity and volumetric heat capacity of liquids. This is due to the effects of natural convection caused by the sensor which introduce a significant error in the measurements. Six commonly known liquids were investigated using the TPS technique and the obtained values were compared to literature and were found to be significantly ...

Influence of pH on Nanofluids’ Viscosity and Thermal Conductivity

The authors used the transient plane source (TPS) technique to investigate the effect of pH on nanofluid thermal conductivity and viscosity. Cu and Al2O3 nanoparticles were dispersed in water to create two nanofluids. pH was then varied and thermal conductivity and viscosity measurements were made on the nanofluids. An optimal pH was found to give the lowest viscosity and highest thermal conductivity, and a significant improvement in thermal ...
