A small-plane heat source method for measuring the thermal conductivities of anisotropic materials

This study aimed to develop a new method based on the transient plane source (TPS) technique to simultaneously measure the in-plane and across-plane thermal conductivities of anisotropic insulating materials using one experimental test. It was found from the experimental results of the thermal conductivities of the anisotropic silica aerogel samples that both the in-plane thermal conductivity and cross-plane thermal conductivity increased with increasing the ambient temperature. The results demonstrated that ...

Theoretical accuracy of anisotropic thermal conductivity determined by transient plane source method

This article studied the potential thermal conductivity deviation of anisotropic materials using a numerical simulation. Anisotropic thermal conductivity may experience deviation due to its noncompliance of the theoretical assumption of the transient plane source (TPS) method. The TPS method was used to measure the in-plane and through-plane thermal conductivities of anisotropic materials where the volumetric heat capacity was known. It was found that the TPS method could be used to ...

Thermal conductivity models for single and multiple filler carbon/liquid crystal polymer composites

Adding conductive fillers to polymer resins improves the thermal conductivity of the polymers. In this study, Thermocarb TC-300 synthetic graphite and Fortafil 243 carbon fiber were added to Vectra A950RX liquid crystal polymer (LCP) to produce anisotropic single and multiple filler composites. A Thermal Constants Analyzer measured the thermal conductivity of the composites using the transient plane source (TPS) technique. The formulations that contained Thermocarb fillers had higher in- and ...

Electrical and thermal conductivities of novel metal mesh hybrid polymer composite bipolar plates for proton exchange membrane fuel cells

A novel technique was used in this research article, to introduce a hybrid mesh to a polymer composite within bipolar plates, for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The mesh added was copper or aluminum based, to allow for an increased thermal conductivity of the PEMFCs. Experimental testing confirms this theory, as the copper-meshed hybrid polymer composite showed a thermal conductivity of 30.0 W/mK, while the aluminum-meshed hybrid polymer composite ...
