Thermophysical properties of Zr–Cu–Al metallic glasses during crystallization

Zr-Cu-Al metallic glasses were formulated with differing compositions to determine their thermophysical properties. It was determined that by decreasing the zirconium content of the metallic glass, the thermal conductivity can be increased. The maximum value of thermal conductivity was found for the metallic glass with a composition of Zr:Cu:Al = 50:39.3:10.7 (at. %). It was found that although the metallic glasses did not crystallize with heat treatment below Tg, they did ...

Performance Assessment of Passive Fire Protection Materials

Three reference passive fire protection materials were tested to determine the effect that fire exposure has on their thermophysical properties. It was determined that the thermophysical properties during fire exposure have a significant impact on the performance of the materials. The knowledge of how the properties of these materials change upon exposure to fire will aid researchers in being able to better calculate the time to failure of the object ...

Fabrication of paraffin-SiO2 shape-stabilized composite phase change material via chemical precipitation method for building energy conservation

The authors have prepared a shape-stabilized composite phase change material (ss-CPCM) using paraffin encapsulated in SiO2. SiO2 was chosen because of its low cost, such that the resultant ss-CPCM would be a feasible option for use at the commercial or industrial scale. The composite was examined using FTIR and XRD and it was confirmed that it had excellent chemical compatibility and stability. The thermal storage capability and thermal conductivity results ...

Thermal property prediction and measurement of organic phase change materials in the liquid phase near the melting point

In this work, the authors tested five organic phase change materials for thermophysical properties (density, heat capacity, and thermal conductivity) in order to determine the best path to prediction (BPP) for the thermal diffusivity of organic PCMs in the liquid phase. Separate BPPs were determined for alkanes and unsaturated acids. The identified BPPs were then tested on a variety of materials and the estimated thermal diffusivity was within 15% for all ...

Understanding in crystallization of polyethylene: the role of boron nitride (BN) particles

The authors examine the melting and crystallization behavior of a polyethylene/boron nitride composite to understand an unexpected exothermic peak when the BN content was greater than 10 wt. %. Based on these observations, an optimal annealing temperature of the composite was investigated to enhance its thermal conductivity. The appearance of the peak was determined to depend on the different nucleated capability of the different BN aggregates in local area. An annealing ...
