Comparative study of the mechanical and thermal properties of lightweight cementitious composites

A comparative study was conducted on the properties of lightweight cementitious composites (LWCCs) mixed with four types of filler particles; EPS beads, dry-expanded plastic microspheres, hollow glass microspheres, and fly ash cenospheres. Thermal conductivity was tested using the transient plane source method. Results showed that thermal conductivity of LWCCs are dictated by the volume of lightweight functional filler (LWF) used and are insensitive to the type of LWF....

Experimental study on anti-icing and deicing performance of polyurethane concrete as road surface layer

Deicing and anti-icing performance of an innovative polyurethane pavement surface layer that replaces asphalt binder was studied. Thermal properties of polyurethane concrete and asphalt concrete were measured using a Thermal Constants Analyzer with transient plane source (TPS) method. Results found that polyurethane concrete had similar thermal conductivity to asphalt concrete, but a much greater specific heat. Polyurethane was also found to have a better anti-icing and deicing performance compared to ...

Preservation of Sand and Building Energy Conservation

Concrete and sand that were replaced by coal bottom ash concrete were analyzed and compared for strength and heat conductivity. Thermal conductivity was measured using an instrument, based on the Transient Plane Source technique. When the samples contained 40% replacement coal, the thermal conductivity value was reduced by 35%, for 60% replacement the thermal conductivity value was reduced by 36.5%, and for 100% replacement, thermal conductivity was reduced further to around 51%....

Mechanical and thermal performance of concrete and mortar cellular materials containing plastic waste

The expanding production of polymeric materials is causing plastic waste to become a growing concern. This study aimed to fabricate cement and mortar composites that contained plastic in an attempt to extend the life of non-reusable plastics. The thermal conductivity of the composite material was measured using the transient plane source (TPS) technique. Results showed that as expected, thermal conductivity decreased as the plastic content in cement and mortar composites ...

Energy saving potential with improved concrete in ice rink floor designs

Ice surfaces dictate energy usage in skating rinks because they are the largest heat exchangers in the building. This study aimed to improve the concrete material used in ice rinks to maximize the performance of their refrigeration systems. The TPS method measured the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of the improved concrete using the Transient Plane Source (TPS) method. Results indicated that adding iron ore to the concrete might improve ...
