On the use of transient plane source sensors for studying materials with direction dependent properties

The Transient Plane Source (TPS) Technique measures the thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and specific heat of solids and liquids. An electrically conducting double spiral nickel sensor pulses a current through a sample which increases its temperature, while simultaneously recording the length of time it took for the sample to heat up. This study, researchers tested the thermal properties of various materials and determined that anisotropy must be considered when these ...

Thermally insulating and fire-retardant lightweight anisotropic foams based on nanocellulose and graphene oxide

The researchers used an instrument to measure the thermal properties (thermal conductivity and specific heat) of anisotropic thermally insulating foams produced by the mixing of nanocellulose, graphene oxide and sepiolite nanorods via the freeze-casting method. These anisotropic foams showed superior thermal properties when compared to expanded polystyrene (a common insulation material), and had a thermal conductivity value of 0.015 W/mK which is half the value for expanded polystyrene. Not only ...

Synergistic Effects of Carbon Fillers in Thermally Conductive Liquid Crystal Polymer Based Resins

Three different carbons (carbon black, synthetic graphite particles and carbon fiber) were added to Vectra A950RX Liquid Crystal Polymer in order to synthesize different composites for use in fuel cells. The carbon fillers were used individually and also in combination with other carbon fillers. A TPS was used to measure the thermal conductivities of the synthesized composites. It was found that the use of synthetic graphite particles as the ...

Thermal conductivity of carbon fiber/liquid crystal polymer composites

Two different types of polyacrylonitrile carbon fibers (Fortafil 243 and Panex 30) were added to thermoplastic matrix (Vectra A950RX Liquid Crystal Polymer) in order to generate carbon fiber/liquid-crystal polymer composites. The in plane and through-plane thermal conductivities of these composites were then evaluated and compared to values generated from a theoretical model, with good agreement. Panex 30 gave higher in-plane thermal conductivity than Fortafil 243 for all volume fractions studied....

Estimation of the Mean Thermal Conductivity of Anisotropic Materials

With the use of multiple thermal instruments, the thermal conductivity (lambda) of fibrous insulations was measured in the plane direction. In this study, a method was put forth the estimate thermal conductivity. This method assumed that the thermal conductivity of the anisotropic material was equivalent to that of an isotropic material with identical bulk density and specific heat. This novel method displays the thermal conductivity of the anisotropic material as √(...
