A comparison of nanofluid thermal conductivity measurements by flash

Some researchers argue that the anomalous k enhancement data, for nanofluids, is caused by inaccuracies of thermal measurement methods. In this paper, measurements on thermal conductivities of nanofluid mixtures (alumina/water) by means of two different methods are accomplished. The thermal conductivity was measured, and through the laser flash method, with the NETZSCH LFA 447 NanoFlash. Five samples of nanofluid, with varying alumina concentration was tested (0.1%, 0.5%, 2.0%, 3.0%, and 4.0%). The deviations between the ...

Determination of the thermal transport properties of ammonia borane and its thermolysis product (polyiminoborane) using the transient plane source technique

The purpose of this study was to measure the thermal properties of ammonia borane and polyiminoborane with the transient plane source (TPS) method to analyze their applicability to heat storage systems. Tests results showed that the thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity of ammonia borane increased as porosity of the samples decreased. Alternatively, both thermal properties of polyiminoborane increased with porosity, and thermal conductivity values were significantly lower than those obtained ...

Transient plane source technique for measurement of thermal conductivity of U and T91 for fast reactor application

Thermal conductivity is one of the most important properties of fuel and cladding material. In this study, the thermal conductivity of uranium and T91 steel were measured using the transient plane source (TPS) method. Results showed that the thermal conductivity of T91 increased gradually to a point, then decreased. Fast reacting cladding materials require high thermal conductivities, and T91 was found to have higher conductivities than other commercial materials. As ...

Experimental and numerical study on thermal conductivity of proton exchange membrane

Proton exchange membranes (PEM) are important components of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) which could potentially substitute fossil energy. The purpose of this study was to theoretically and experimentally study how the thermal conductivity of the PEM, Nafion 117, is related to water content and temperature. A thermal analyzer measured the thermal conductivity of dry Nafion 117 using the transient plane source (TPS) method. Results showed that, as predicted, the thermal ...

Preparation and characteristics of mercaptobenzene functionalized graphite and epoxy-based hybrid membranes

Graphite papers can enhance mechanical properties while lowering electrical properties, however, to generate conducting membranes, the chemical and thermal characteristics of the papers require further reduction. In this study, mercaptobenzene (MB) functionalized graphite and epoxy-based hybrid membranes were prepared and analyzed. A thermal analyzer measured the thermal conductivity of the samples using the transient plane source (TPS) method. Results showed that the powder-pressed pellets made of graphite-MB-gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) had ...
