New biobased foams from wood byproducts

Biobased foams derived from lignins and tanins were produced by mechanical frothing and curing. The obtained foams did not crack after drying. The foams were found to be good thermal insulators with thermal conductivities ranging from 0.035 to 0.055 Wm-1K-1....

Core-shell structure design of pulverized expandable graphite particles and their application in flame-retardant rigid polyurethane foams

The authors describe a synthesis method for a series of pulverized expandable graphite (pEG)/melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin core-shell structure particles. The particles are also added into rigid polyurethane foams (RPUF) to characterize the flame-retardant, mechanical, and thermal insulation properties of the RPUF/pEG-MF composites. It was found that the pEG/MF particles showed good flame-retardant performance in the composites by providing a physical barrier effect....

Low thermal conductivity and rapid synthesis of n-type cobalt skutterudite via a hydrothermal method

Researchers are currently developing ways to produce thermoelectric materials, such as skutterudites, with low lattice thermal conductivity. In this paper, a hydrothermal synthesis procedure was developed to fabricate CoSb3 compounds. A thermal constant analyzer measured the thermal conductivity of three CoSb3 samples using the transient plane source (TPS) method. Results showed that thermal conductivity increased with decreasing temperature, and was much lower for the hydrothermal-synthesized CoSb3 samples than other fabrication ...

Room temperature flexible isocyanate-free polyurethane foams

Non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) have the potential to replace polyurethane (UP) foams in the future. This study attempts to synthesize non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) at room temperature for the first time. A TPS instrument measured the thermal conductivity of the foams using the transient plane source (TPS) method. Results showed that foams prepared with 10 or 20% of PPOBC640 had the highest thermal conductivities. NIPU foams had a slightly higher thermal conductivity than PU ...

An experimental investigation of melting of nanoparticle-enhanced phase change materials (NePCMs) in a bottom-heated vertical cylindrical cavity

A nanoparticle-enhanced phase change material (NePCM) is prepared by the dispersal of carbon nanotubes in 1-dodecanol. The objective of this experiment was to determine if the addition of nanoparticles could increase the thermal conductivity of the base PCM while resulting in a NePCM that would still have the required properties of a functional PCM. It was found that the thermal conductivity was enhanced through the addition of the carbon nanotubes; ...
