Experimental determination and fractal modeling of the effective thermal conductivity of autoclaved aerated concrete: Effects of moisture content

Autoclaved aerated concrete was studied because it has potential to be used in the design of energy-efficient buildings. Three different samples were tested, each with a unique density. Of particular interest to this work was the thermal conductivity of the samples, as this material would be used as a thermally insulating concrete. The thermal conductivities were measured at various percentages of moisture content, and it was found that increasing moisture ...

A new method for preparing tannin-based foams

The authors present a novel method for the preparation of highly porous tannin-based meringues by shear mechanical mixing of tannin, hexamine, and Kolliphore® ELP in water. The liquid foam was then cured in an oven at 85oC for 24 hours. The resultant solid foams were found to be homogeneous and they were also found to have similar thermal conductivity and other physical properties to tannin-based foams prepared by more traditional methods....

Thermophysical Properties of Porous Sandstones: Measurements and Comparative Study of Some Representative Thermal Conductivity Models

The thermal properties of five sandstones were measured. The sandstones were taken from the base of Khewra located in Pakistan. The thermal conductivity, thermal diffusivity, and specific heat capacity were determined using the transient plane source technique, and the porosity and density of the sandstone samples were also determined. A formula for the estimation of thermal conductivity was modified to better fit the experimental data, and it was determined that ...

Use of silicon carbide sludge to form porous alkali-activated materials for insulating application

In an effort to be more environmentally friendly, the construction industry is investing more in 'green' concretes and insulation materials. The purpose of this research was to create a porous foam using a geopolymer mixture and varying amounts of silica carbide sludge. By changing the amount of the sludge added, researchers could control what type of microstructure was produced. The effect of this variation on porosity and thermal properties was ...

The effects of oil palm shell volume fractions on thermal conductivity for insulation concrete

The thermal properties of oil palm shell (OPS) are investigated to determine if it could be used as a lightweight aggregate for a concrete mixture. The thermal conductivity, diffusivity, and specific heat were all tested through a transient plane source (TPS) method. The thermal conductivity and diffusivity both increased as the volume fraction of OPS increased. This is because OPS is very porous which gives it an inherently low thermal ...
