Abstract: The Transient Plane Source method (TPS) simultaneously measures thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity. This paper investigates the possibilities of using Hot Disk sensors, to record the thermal effusivity of a substrate. With the original Hot Disk method, the thermal effusivity of uniaxial, homogeneous materials in the through-plane direction can be estimated. Tests were performed to analyze the differences in single-sided vs. double-sided testing. For 1-dimensional samples, where heat flow is controlled along the sample, only normal-direction thermal effusivity can be estimated. However in 3D samples, the normal-direction thermal effusivity can be directly computed from the thermal conductivity and diffusivity recorded by the Hot Disk sensor. Results indicated that normal-direction thermal effusivity is more stable than in-plane thermal diffusivity.
